Laughter Against the Machine

W. Kamau Bell, Hari Kondabolu, and Nato Green, three of the nation’s most fearless and thought-provoking comedians, bring their sold-out comedy tour Laughter Against The Machine to the Pacific Northwest for the very first time, this Friday and Saturday at the Balagan Theatre (1117 E Pike St).

The East Bay Express wrote that Laughter Against the Machine was “the brainiest, most literate comedy tour… it’s smart, it’s heady, it gets to the very edge of what’s tolerable.” The SF Weekly recently referred to it as “the funniest comedy show we’ve ever seen.” LATM is a rare stand-up comedy show filled with biting commentary that attacks the entire spectrum from the rightest right to the leftest left.

This show marks the return of local comedy hero Hari Kondabolu. Kondabolu began his comedy career in Seattle while working as an immigrant rights organizer during the day from 2005-2007. His brief two years in Seattle led to appearances on the 2007 HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Seattle Times wrote that Kondabolu is “a young man reaching for the hand-scalding torch of confrontational comics like Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor.” Earlier this year, he appeared on John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show on Comedy Central. He returns with Bay Area stars W. Kamau Bell and Nato Green. Bell has been called “the most important guy doing comedy right now” by Margaret Cho and has won rave reviews nationally for his solo show “The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour.” Green, a union organizer, was recently named SF Weekly’s Best Comedian of 2010 and is a regular Huffington Post contributor

Seattle Comedy TONIGHT: Laff Hole 5th Anniversary

On Wednesday June 2nd, Laff Hole will celebrate its 5th Anniversary with a special show at Chop Suey (1325 E Madison). Hosted by two of PROK’s founders, Kevin Hyder and Emmett Montgomery, the show will be a celebration of all the comics who have shared the Laff Hole stage.  The musical guest will be The Pale Pacific and Seattle’s own Jon Keister of “Almost Live!” will headline.

Since its founding in 2005, Laff Hole has played host to some of the finest up-and-coming comedians in the northwest.  During its five year run, local favorites like Reggie Watts, Hari Kondabolu and Rory Scovel have gone on to perform on “Live at Gotham,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”

LAFF HOLE with RYLEE NEWTON!!

Holy crap, is it the second Wednesday of the month already? That means it’s time for another LaffHole!
And have we got a treat for that ass! Our headliner is Ms. Rylee Newton!
Rylee Newton has appeared on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado. She has also appeared in my dreams. Hmmmmm….. Newton-y.
But, that ain’t all, not even a little bit. We also have one of Seattle’s favorite sons, Mr. Dan Moore!

Raised in a small town, Dan is big-city-funny. His opinions and interpretations about politics, life, and love are magical to watch. The Stranger Slog called him “Jarring and hilarious!” He has headlined the Week of Fun comedy festival, and has developed a niche for himself that has all the newness and creativity of the alternative comedy scene, while still being palatable and accessible and just damn funny!

You ready to pop from excitement, yet? Well then hold on to your expletive deleted, because our musical guest is the band Lady Drama!
Lady Drama plays a unique brand of melodic rock that The Stranger describes as “hopeful, intricate music – perfect for an early-autumn evening.”
Along with all that goodness, we’ve also got:
Barbara Holm
Seth Lazear
Brett Hamil
The Phrase-Off!
Surprises!
Hugs?
And host Brian Boshes!

TV funnyman Paul F. Tompkins returns to Seattle for two shows this weekend at Re-Bar. Tompkins has appeared on everything form VH1’s “Best Week Ever” to the Sarah Silverman show, but is probably best known (among comedy nerds at least) for his work on Mr. Show.
